Where does a foreign exchange loss go under IFRS 18?
IFRS 18 gives the statement of profit or loss a new shape, with income and expenses sorted into operating, investing, financing, income taxes and discontinued operations. Foreign exchange differences and derivative gains are where students and preparers stall. Is an exchange loss automatically financing because it sounds like a treasury item? Does a hedge gain follow the hedged item, the hedged risk or something else? And what about a derivative nobody designated as a hedge?
Why the label is not the answer
The words foreign exchange tell you very little on their own, and IFRS 18 asks you to look past them. Look past them to what, though? Put a line in the wrong category and the amount moves between subtotals such as operating profit or loss and profit or loss before financing and income taxes.
One importer, several moving parts
The lesson follows Kudu Imports, a South African importer working in Rand with euro exposures. It holds a euro loan, a euro payable it settles part way through the year, a forward designated as a hedge, an undesignated currency swap and a branch operating under hyperinflation. Each one produces a remeasurement line, and each line has to be traced to a category before the statement can be built. Along the way you will see why measuring an exchange difference depends on what happened to the balance, and why a designated hedge and an undesignated derivative raise different questions.
The exceptions and special cases
IFRS 18 also carries an exception for undue cost or effort, a rule for cases where matching would mean grossing up gains and losses, and specific requirements for the net monetary gain of a hyperinflationary operation. Knowing when each one applies, and when it does not, is what separates a confident classification from a guess.

Questions about this topic
Are foreign exchange differences always financing under IFRS 18?
That is one of the most common assumptions, and the lesson tests it line by line. It takes a loan and a trade payable in the same currency and asks which category each exchange difference belongs in, and why.
Where does a hedging derivative's gain go in the IFRS 18 statement of profit or loss?
IFRS 18 has requirements for designated hedging instruments and separate ones for derivatives used to manage a risk without being designated. The lesson works through a forward and a currency swap and asks what decides each placement.
When does IFRS 18 apply?
IFRS 18 applies to annual reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027. Earlier application is permitted and must be disclosed.
